What is "Yoga Nidra"

Yoga nidra, often called "yogic sleep," is a guided meditation technique that induces a state of deep relaxation while maintaining conscious awareness. Unlike traditional yoga practices that involve movement or holding poses, yoga nidra is typically practiced lying down in shavasana (corpse pose), with a teacher or recording guiding you through the session.

During yoga nidra, you are led through a series of stages that may include setting an intention (sankalpa), body scanning, breath awareness, and visualization. The practice systematically moves your awareness through the five layers of self (pancha maya kosha), promoting a sense of wholeness and balance. While your body is completely relaxed—sometimes as deeply as in sleep—your mind remains awake and receptive.

Yoga nidra is accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities, as it requires no movement; you simply lie down and follow the instructions

The benefits of regular practice include:

  • Profound relaxation and stress reduction

  • Improved sleep quality and regulation of sleep cycles

  • Enhanced emotional resilience and the ability to process and release stored emotions

  • Reduced anxiety and mild depression

  • Improved concentration, memory, and creativity

  • Potential for personal transformation and manifestation of intentions

Yoga nidra works by calming the nervous system, balancing the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) responses, and promoting the release of melatonin, a hormone associated with sleep and healing. Even short sessions can be as restorative as several hours of traditional sleep, making it a powerful tool for holistic well-being
